Why charter a sailboat in the BVI’s?

There are three big reason to visit. First, the land: With dozens of islands, all unique in their own way, there’s plenty of destinations that will awe and inspire you.  Second, the sea: The crystal clear waters are teeming with life and they’re well-protected by mountainous islands and cays.  And finally, the wind: The steady and dependable easterly trade winds makes sailing pleasant and dependable.

Am I a good enough sailor?

Maybe?  Or maybe not.  But the exciting part is you can learn.  There are endless amounts of resources available and top notch ASA and US Sailing schools that are looking for students just like you. Sailing challenges you physically and mentally – you can spend your whole life learning new things.  And the good thing is, even experienced sailor are constantly leaning and sharing. So everyone is in the same boat. (sorry about the pun)

I get nervous, can I see land?

Have no fear, your can always spot land.  The harmony of land, sea and sky will constantly astound you.  That alone is worth the price of admission.

Why is the boat named Montyvideo?

It’s a play on Montevideo, (monty-vi-day-oh)  the capital of Uruguay and its sister city, a small town in western Minnesota.  The Minnesota Montevideo is not pronounced the same, it’s pronounced “Montyvideo”(Hence the name). The origin of the original name is clouded in mystery but one possible definition of Montyvideo is “mountains in motion” which perfectly evokes sailing in the Caribbean.

Is it appropriate for children?

Didn’t you dream of going to such a place as a child?  It was the inspiration for Treasure Island after all. There are countless things to learn, see and do, and every child is better for it.  Teach your children stewardship, the finer points of sailing and let them discover the world beneath the waves. Here’s video to get you started.

Is it expensive?

The cool things about chartering a sailboat is that your transportation, recreation and accommodations are included, so your trip is all set.  Provision your food at the Riteway supermarket on Tortola and enjoy all the island activities.  Even though the price of chartering the sailboat is high, you can still make it an inexpensive vacation.

My wife is into spelunking, are there any caves in the area?

There are no land caves that we know of but there are sea caves on Norman Island.  Snorkeling in them will be a highlight of your trip. Your wife will love it!

We’re very active and love to swim and snorkel. Are there activities on land?

Hiking is the most underrated activity in the Virgins. There are many great hikes in the BVIs and especially on St John in the USVIs. Check into our blog for the best hikes and instruction on how to check in and out of the USVIs.

What’s the best island to visit?

There all wonderful for different reasons we’d recommend a 10 day to 2 week trip so you can see them all.
